ABOUT THE COURSE

Entrance Requirements

入學條件

All applicants should meet at least one of the following requirements:

  1. Postgraduate Diploma in Buddhist Studies awarded by the Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies (PGIPBS), University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka; or

  2. Bachelor’s Degree from a recognised university; or

  3. Any other qualifications deemed as equivalent to the above by the Faculty Board of the Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies (PGIPBS). Programme Structure, Course units and Lecture Hours.

Programme Structure

課程結構

With effect from 2023, students are required to follow seven taught courses comprising two compulsory courses (MABS 01 and MABS 72) and five elective courses to be selected from those announced for the academic year. For MABS 72, students are required to attend two workshops and submit a 5000-word graduation essay on a theme related to one of the courses followed and selected with the guidance and approval of the lecturers concerned.

學生須修讀七門科目,包括兩門必修課 (MABS 01 及 MABS 72) 及五門選修科。

MABS 72 要求學員參加兩個工作坊及撰寫一篇5000字論文。

每個學年有兩個學期,按學期制授課。每個學年,我們將開設約九門科目供學生選擇。

Assessment Method

For "MABS 01 Buddhist Doctrines of Pali Nikāyas: Analysis and Interpretation" (compulsory).

In-class Participation (10%), Two Short Essays (40%), and Final Examination (50%).

For "MABS 72 Research Methodology and Extended Essay" (compulsory).

Workshop Participation (10%), Essay Proposal (20%), and

Extended Essay (= graduation essay) (70%).

For language course units, Pāli and Sanskrit

Attendance and In-class Participation (20%). Mid-term Test (30%), and Final Examination (50%).

For all other course units

In-class Participation (10%), Short Essay (30%), and Long Essay (60%).

For each academic year, we will make available about ten courses for selection by students. The number and type of courses to be selected will depend on the availability of teachers, feedback from students and other circumstances. Applicants interested in enrolling for the programme in a particular academic year should consult the Academic Director or Course Co‑ordinator for courses available for the academic year concerned.

All courses are offered on a semester basis. The academic year comprises two semesters.

Classes will mainly be conducted on weekday evenings and weekends.

Provision for Enrolment as Occasional Students

Applicants who are interested in taking only certain courses (instead of joining the whole MA programme) may enrol as Occasional Students. They do not need to meet the above‑mentioned entrance requirements for enrolment. Upon completion of the chosen course, students will be issued a Certificate of Attendance. For those who have successfully completed all the requirements of the course (including final examination and written assignments, etc), a Certificate of Completion with the passing grade obtained will be issued.

​申請人若想修讀個別科目(即不完整修讀文學碩士課程),可申請為單科選讀(非正規)生,並無需符合上述入學條件。修畢科目的學生將獲頒發修讀證明。修讀人士若符合所修科目的全部要求(包括筆試、習作等),將獲頒發修讀證書。

Students are required to take six courses, each of which consists of 30 lecture hours. The requirements apply to all course units offered. However, part-time students can spread out their course selection over the 2 years according to their own decision. 
 

Example:

• First year 3 units, Second year 4 units (with the methodology unit with the graduation    essay as one unit)
• First year 2 units, Second year 5 units; or
• First year 4 units, Second year 3 units.

Occasional Student Fee RM 1,800 (per course)

* NOTES:

• Registration Fee is non-refundable once your application is accepted by the

  Faculty Board of  PGIPBS, and/or if you decline the offer of acceptance.
• Registration Fee will be refunded to you if your application is not accepted by the

  Faculty Board of PGIPBS.
• Sangha members: please write in with a valid reason for waiver of Course Fees.
• Course Fees are subject to change without advance notice.
